CryptoKitties: All The Zen

CryptoKitties: All The Zen (ATZ) is a season-based idle game that reintroduces the CryptoKitties brand to casual mobile gamers through Telegram mini-apps and iOS. Launched October 2024. ~300K players onboarded. The reboot thesis: take a dormant Web3 brand with global recognition, wrap it in an accessible free-to-play loop, and distribute it through Telegram's viral mini-app ecosystem.


The Product Vision

From the Product Canon:

"CK: ATZ is a season-based idle game about cozy momentum and clever resets. Players hatch Fancy Kitties to power three engines -- ZPS (direct ZEN income), APS (ZEN flowing into the Big Egg), and PB (the egg's post-claim head start). A six-hour claim rhythm, quick 'rub the egg' spikes on hatch, Family Ascension, and global Rebirth create a loop that always moves forward and regularly explodes with progress."

The player fantasy:

"I check in, claim my egg, hatch a Fancy, and my whole engine jumps. Ascension and Rebirth make me faster every run. I sprint up the trophy ladder this season -- and when the next season starts, I'm excited to race again."


Why This Exists

Three strategic reasons:

  1. Telegram distribution. ATZ launched on Telegram to leverage mini-app virality -- following the success pattern of hit mini-games like Hamster Kombat that attracted millions of users. Telegram is the highest-distribution channel available to Web3 products.

  2. Brand revival on Flow. ATZ is the first gaming initiative in the CryptoKitties brand revitalization. CryptoKitties is the most recognizable brand in crypto history (launched 2017, congested Ethereum, introduced NFTs to mainstream press). The brand has dormant equity that no competitor can replicate.

  3. Memecoin experiment. ATZ pilots "Meowcoins" -- a memecoin layer that players earn by hitting in-game objectives. Positioned as opt-in meta layer that complements but does not dominate the core ZEN progression.


Core Loop

The game runs on a three-engine system where every Fancy Kitty contributes to all three stats simultaneously:

ZPS (Zen Per Second) Passive ZEN accumulation to spendable balance. Spent on upgrades and new eggs.
APS (Accumulation Per Second) Rate that ZEN fills the Regenesis Egg (center of screen). Claimable on ~6hr cooldown.
PB (Pet Bonus) After "petting" the egg, balance resets to player's total Pet Bonus instead of zero.

The progression rhythm:

Earn ZEN (passive) → Big Egg fills (APS) → Claim egg (~6hr cycle)
→ Hatch Fancy Kitty (instant bonus) → Buy upgrades (milestones)
→ Ascend maxed families (prestige within season)
→ Rebirth (convert ALL TIME ZEN to prestige multiplier)
→ Season ends → Points persist → Fresh start

Key mechanics beyond the core loop:

  • Egg Rubbing / TAO Claims: Each Fancy Family egg purchase fills a TAO bar. Rubbing the egg for ~6 seconds triggers a claim granting 20 seconds of APS output.
  • Ninja Kitties: 6-12 daily. Players collect one per egg rub, tap for random boosts (ZPS/APS spikes, ZEN injection, bonus beans). Same pool for all players, randomized order.
  • Ascension: Max-level families can be "Ascended" -- levels reset to 0, new progression curve unlocks with stronger ZPS/APS/PB scaling. Goes to level 100, then unlocks a Boon multiplier affecting ALL Ascended Kitties.

Non-Negotiable Pillars

From the Product Canon -- these cannot be traded away:

Clarity: "Players can always see where power comes from and where it goes."

Fair race: "Mostly linear trophy track; finite seasons; no hidden advantages."

Respect for time: "Progress in minutes; rewarding cadence without punishing missed windows."

Config-first balance: "Mechanics are durable; numbers are seasonal and live in config."

Web3 with purpose: "Flow integration that adds value (Egg NFT stipend) without adding friction."


The Economy

ATZ runs a multi-token economy:

Web3 integration is light by design:

"Egg NFT holders receive additional free daily currency (holder stipend) inside ATZ... clean UX; no wallet hurdles for non-holders. Players just have to link their ETH or EVM wallet that holds NFTs to their ATZ account and we check blockchain status for ownership of qualifying NFTs."


CK2: The Deep Game Design

The CK2 Game Design Doc describes a substantially deeper game system layered on top of ATZ, with genetics, breeding, treasure hunts, and competitive systems. Key elements:

Egg Incubator & Kitty Genetics

New eggs arrive every 60 seconds (if an incubator slot is open). Players hatch with GOLD (requires available Kitty Housing). Every incubator-hatched Kitty is a Basic Purebred -- base traits, all gene slots identical, only Abundant genes. Players upgrade incubators with Aura (element-specific currency) to unlock rarer genes.

Kitties are either Housed (tradeable, breedable with other players) or Unhoused (inventory-limited, personal only). Housing is a purchasable upgrade per Kitty.

Treasure Hunt (Primary Idle Loop)

The main earn mechanic. Players deploy Hero Kitty teams to explore elemental Worlds:

  • Gold Cap: Each level has a Max Gold Earn Rate. Team power exceeding the cap converts to Aura (element currency).
  • Loot Deck: Each level adds Gene Scrap cards. Finding enough scraps + spending Aura unlocks new traits in the Egg Incubator. Priority queue ensures no scraps are missed.
  • Synergies: Team composition puzzles (e.g., "Fire + Air + Pattern trait") boost efficiency.
  • Boss Gates: Progression checkpoints requiring specific Aura thresholds within time limits -- forces diverse kitty breeding.

Star Systems & Stickerbook

As players progress, they earn Keys to unlock Star Systems (one per element). Each system has:

  • Hero Kitty: One element-matching kitty assigned as the system's hero
  • Population: Kitties sent to populate systems earn XP based on quality (mutations, speed, star level). Population points increase Max Earn Rate for that world.
  • Stickerbook: Pages with specific requirements ("FIRE KITTY with Tangerine Cattribute"). Completing pages grants Earn Rate bonuses. Pages range from Easy (element + one trait) to Challenge (element + four traits with Mutations + V. Fast).

Badges (Homegrown for bred kitties, V. Fast for speed) apply to full pages when every kitty qualifies, granting bonus multipliers.

Kitty Clock (Revenue Driver)

Global clock releasing new Kitties every 15 minutes -- first come, first served. Unlike Egg Incubator, these are visible before purchase, cost real money (cheaper with crypto), and are always Very Fast + Advanced Element. Major revenue faucet for high-end breeding ecosystem.

How It Connects to the Portfolio

CryptoKitties is the brand revival bet. It tests whether a dormant Web3 IP with unmatched name recognition can reach mainstream casual gamers through Telegram distribution. If ATZ works:

  • It proves Dapper can build beyond licensed collectibles
  • It demonstrates Flow as a gaming platform (light on-chain integration, Egg NFT stipend, soulbound Star System progression)
  • The Meowcoin experiment informs the broader $FAN token thesis
  • The Kitty Clock and breeding ecosystem create a real-money economy on Flow

If it fails, the learnings about Telegram distribution, memecoin mechanics, and idle game design still inform the collectibles products.
