Protocol Identity

Flow is a general-purpose Layer-1 network (proof-of-stake). It runs two execution environments: native Cadence (resource-oriented, compile-time safety) and full EVM equivalence (any Solidity contract deploys without modification). Both share the same state.

  • Founded by: Dapper Labs (Flow Foundation merged into Dapper Labs, April 2026)
  • Governance: FLIPs (Flow Improvement Proposals)
  • Languages: Cadence (native) + Solidity (via EVM equivalence)
  • Legal entity: Flow Foundation (George Town, Cayman Islands)
  • Canonical site: flow.com

Positioning: "Where Agents Live." The thesis: everything that makes blockchain hard for humans -- key management, gas, multi-step transactions -- is trivially easy for AI agents. Everything agents need -- programmable value transfer, transparent state, autonomous execution, trustless interaction with other agents -- is what blockchains provide. Flow adds Forte scheduled transactions and structural MEV resistance.

Key Upgrades

Upgrade Date What It Did
Crescendo Sep 2024 EVM equivalence -- deploy Solidity on Flow. Cadence 1.0 shipped simultaneously. Two ecosystems, one chain, one upgrade.
Forte Oct 22, 2025 Actions framework -- on-chain automation, triggers, scheduled execution, WebAuthn/Passkey native mobile onboarding, 128-bit fixed-point types for high-precision DeFi. PebbleDB replaced BadgerDB (80% lower memory, 60% lower CPU on state reads).
FLIP 351 Dec 8, 2025 Transaction fee update -- FLOW becomes net deflationary at sustained 250 TPS. Computation unit cost set to 4E-05 FLOW, inclusion fee 1E-4 FLOW, with dynamic surge factor during congestion.
LayerZero OFT Jun 16, 2025 Native $FLOW live on Ethereum mainnet via OFT standard -- no wrapped tokens.
Fusaka EVM Activation Nov 26, 2025 Fusaka activation on Flow EVM mainnet -- EVM transactions capped at 16M Gas.
Zero-Downtime HCU Feb 18, 2026 (testnet) Height coordinated upgrades without pausing transaction execution.

CANONICAL: "Flow shipped 20+ mainnet upgrades in 2025: 12 height-coordinated upgrades, 2 full network sporks (Crescendo in September, Forte in October), and multiple rolling updates. After the December 27 security incident, the team shipped 11 more mainnet upgrades in under 8 weeks (January-February 2026). No other L1 shipped at this pace in the same period." -- Flow Soundbites, March 2026

Technical Differentiators

Feature What It Means Competitive Position
Forte scheduled transactions On-chain automation -- contracts schedule their own execution. No keepers, cron jobs, or centralized triggers. Genuinely unique. No other production blockchain has this. Solana needs Clockwork/keeper bots. Base needs Gelato/Chainlink Automation.
Cadence language Resource-oriented (reentrancy impossible at the language level), no bytecode limit, capability-based security. Enables architectures like FCM (zero-liquidation lending with active rebalancing) that are structurally impossible on other chains.
Dual execution Cadence + full EVM side-by-side, shared state. Solidity developers deploy without modification. Cadence developers get safety guarantees.
40M+ accounts Identity infrastructure from NBA Top Shot, NFL All Day, Disney Pinnacle, Ticketmaster. Largest existing user base of any L1 not named Ethereum.
Structural MEV resistance Architectural, not bolted on. Proof of Possession (Oct 2025) closes rogue-key substitution attacks. Agents can transact without frontrunning risk.
Native account abstraction Multi-sig, key rotation, programmable access control at the protocol level. Agent wallets with spending policies work out of the box.

Deflationary Mechanics

FLIP 351 (live Dec 8, 2025): At sustained 250 TPS, transaction fees collected exceed new tokens issued for staking rewards = net deflationary. Fees offset inflation by reducing net new issuance. Daily fees spiked from ~$20 to ~$146 on Dec 9 (day after activation). Total Q4 fees: $2,580 (+62.4% QoQ).

50M FLOW Burn (Feb 23, 2026): Foundation acquired FLOW through open-market purchases + treasury funds (Dec 27, 2025 -- Feb 22, 2026) and permanently burned 50,343,896.87 FLOW -- approximately 4% of total supply. Verifiable on-chain: Flowscan.

CANONICAL: "The Foundation has also committed to accumulating an additional 50M FLOW for long-term treasury. This is an ongoing structural commitment to token health, not a one-off event." -- Flow Soundbites, Feb 23, 2026

Ongoing accumulation commitment: Foundation committing to accumulate a minimum of an additional 50M FLOW for long-term treasury. Not a one-time event.

Security Incident (Dec 27, 2025)

What happened: Security exploit via type confusion vulnerability in Cadence runtime (v1.8.8). Attacker deployed 40+ malicious contracts using a three-part exploit chain. Tokens were duplicated (not minted), so total supply counters remained unchanged.

Realized financial damage: ~$3.9M USD (value bridged off-network via Celer, LayerZero, deBridge before halt). 1.094 billion counterfeit FLOW was deposited to centralized exchanges, the vast majority frozen before liquidation.

Recovery: Isolated Recovery plan -- no rollback, no transaction replay, self-organized, globally coordinated. Phased restoration: Phase 1 (Dec 29: Cadence live) -> Phase 2 (Dec 30: cleanup) -> Phase 3 (Jan 1-2: EVM restored) -> Phase 4 (Jan 2+: bridges/exchanges resume).

Remediation: All counterfeit tokens traced, reclaimed, and destroyed on-chain. Jan 6: 484M FLOW burned (initial). Jan 30: 87.4B FLOW permanently destroyed (final remediation complete). Community Governance Council executed destruction via super-majority validator consensus.

CANONICAL: "Flow executed one of the most complex recoveries in blockchain history -- self-organized, coordinated globally, and under pressure -- restoring Cadence and EVM through an Isolated Recovery plan that avoided a rollback entirely." -- Flow Soundbites

Network uptime: Fully operational since Dec 29, 2025. Post-mortem published Jan 6 at flow.com/post/dec-27-technical-post-mortem.

Exchange Status

~28 active exchanges as of April 2, 2026 (CoinGecko). All major global exchanges fully operational.

Primary exchanges (for community posts and guides): Binance, HTX, Coinbase, Kraken, OKX, Bybit, KuCoin, Gate.io, MEXC, BitMart.

Exchange resumption post-incident: Kraken (Jan 2) -> Coinbase, Gate.io, OKX (early Jan) -> HTX (Feb 12-16) -> Binance (Feb 13-16) -> MEXC (Feb 18). Binance monitoring tag removed March 6, 2026 -- joint resolution statement confirming "all issues related to the security incident have been resolved."

Korean exchanges: Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone delisted effective March 16, 2026 (DAXA decision -- withdrawal deadline April 16, 2026). Korbit remains active (FLOW/KRW, full trading/deposits/withdrawals). DAXA is a self-regulatory exchange consortium, not a government regulator. No government regulatory authority in any jurisdiction has taken action against FLOW.
